The Tiny Terror has a great reputation for it's tone. It's
an interesting design which doesn't follow the usual Fender/Marshall designs but is more like (very
like in some parts) a VOX AC15.
It is a cathode biased push-pull amp which is fairly unusual
as most are fixed bias. This
gives it a really warm, thick tone. Probably the most famous amps that are ALWAYS cathode biased
are Matchless. Like
the VOX, there is some debate over whether it is in fact a class A amp or not.
It sounds great when driven hard but unless
they are able to play the amp at high volume most owners will never hear it because it's very LOUD.
In its standard form it has a power switch that lowers
the amp voltages - NOT a triode/pentode switch as some people say. This works to lower the volume
to some extent but half power is NOT half volume. To halve the volume you need 1/10th of the
power.
The amp works very well with Power Scaling™ and being cathode
biased it costs a lot less to scale than a fixed bias amp.
From the factory the valves are biased at a very high idle level
which shortens the valve life and - in my opinion - does not sound as good as when they are biased
to a lower
setting
which we do as part of the Power Scaling™ installation.
To keep it looking nice we fit a new combined mains/standby
switch and replace the Power control with the Power Scaling™ control
with a matching Orange control knob.
